Project Overview

In 2019, Dior moved from its single-floor office to a new location in midtown Manhattan. Though only a few blocks away, its new office fills four floors above the lobby. With more space comes an empty wall to fill, and what better to fill them than inspiring quotes by Christian Dior? In addition to the quotes, the elevator landing on each floor is to have a custom wallpaper design. And don't forget about the bird, monkey, and giraffe that permanently resides outside the lunchroom.

Design Challenges

The initial design was backlit letters pin-mounted to the wall; the words made from MDF where a channel runs behind each letter for the LED lighting. In the final design stage, the client informed us that the walls are Corian, a solid patterned material. Mounting holes in drywall can be filled with spackle and repainted for future applications, but because of its patterned nature, the entire wall of Corian would need replacing. 

The alternative was to CNC-cut painted acrylic letters that adhered to walls using M3 VHB double-stick tape.  

Other fixtures designed for the office space were display vitrines, mounting hardware for the bird and monkey, and symbolic metal signage.
